National Open Access Week

Open-access (OA) literature is digital, online, free of charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions.  “Open Access to information – the free, immediate, online access to the results of scholarly research, and the right to use and re-use those results as you need – has the power to transform the way research and scientific inquiry are conducted. It has direct and widespread implications for academia, medicine, science, industry, and for society as a whole.”  What makes it possible is the internet and the consent of the author or copyright-holder.

There are two primary vehicles for delivering OA to research articles:  Publishing in OA journals, and submitting your preprints to OA archives or depositing your postprints in an open- access repository.

Help make Open Access the new norm in scholarship and research.  Check out the Directory of Open Access Journals for titles in your field.  Find out more about what you as a faculty member or academic administrator can do here.

Natural Standard Trial

The Swilley Library is participating in a trial of Natural Standard in conjunction with the Mercer School of Medicine Library and the Savannah Health Sciences Library at Memorial University Medical Center.

Swilley currently subscribes to Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database.  When testing the Natural Standard database please evaluate whether it offers comparable content as our current database.  If all the libraries agree to purchase Natural Standard it would be in place of Natural Medicines.  The trial lasts until October 31, 2010.  Following the trial a survey will be sent out to assess interest.

Scientific Collaboration on Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative

The ADNI is a partnership, combining the resources and expertise of the National Institute on Aging, the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, academic investigators, pharmaceutical companies, the US Food and Drug Administration , the NIH Foundation, the Alzheimer’s Association, and the Institute for the Study of Aging.

An essential feature of the ADNI is that the clinical, neuropsychological, imaging, and biological data and biological samples will be made available to all qualified scientific investigators as a public domain research resource.

Radical Science

Who is this man and why should you care?

He's Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google.  Genetic tests have shown that he has a mutation in his LRRK2 gene and is at increased risk for Parkinson's disease.  He's donated over $50 million dollars to Parkinson's research and he wants to do the research differently and faster.  According to this article in Wired, he "is proposing to bypass centuries of scientific epistemology in favor of a more Googley kind of science. He wants to collect data first, then hypothesize, and then find the patterns that lead to answers. And he has the money and the algorithms to do it."
Read the article and see the demo here.
