Try out this new medical quick reference source

The Mercer University libraries are pleased to offer trial access to DynaMed, an evidence-based, point-of-care tool with nearly 2,000 clinical topic summaries. A PDA version is also available for Palm or Windows Mobile. Please note that DynaMed is similar to the popular program UptoDate, but is updated daily and is more affordable for library and group subscriptions. You will need to access the library's passwords page; look for the password and Dynamed link in the Trial Databases section.

NLM's WISER system for 1st responders

The National Library of Medicine maintains WISER, Wireless Information System for Emergency Resonders. This system provides information helpful to first responders to hazardous material incidents. This database, which is available as a program that can be run on a PC or as an online database when there is an Internet connection available, includes hazardous substance identification, physical characteristics, human health information, and containment and suppression advice.

New database for molecular imaging and contrast agents

The National Institutes of Health has a new database that provides key research data on in vivo molecular imaging and contrast agents. Visit their FAQ for more information on the Molecular Imaging and Contrast Agent Database.

Easier Access to MDConsult

Now you can create a personal account in MDConsult that will enable you to more easily access its contents. Use our institutional access to MDConsult.
1. Log in to the GAIN system.
2. Click on the MDConsult link.
3. Use the Click for Personal Login link on the right side of the page.
4. Click on Get a Personal Account.

Once you set up a personal login, anytime you are directed to the MDConsult mainpage, (http://home.mdconsult.com), you should be able to login directly, without having to go back through the GAIN system. This will be especially helpful if you find links to MDConsult online journals through our website.

Guide for finding the right DI source

Where can you find information about a foreign drug? an off-label use? side effects of a medication? Just as the amount of medical information has increased over the years, so has the number of sources where you can find specific kinds of drug information. The key to finding your answer is to look in the appropriate source. Use the Basic Drug Information Resources Guide on the Swilley Library pharmacy page.

Access to American Chemical Society journals

We have on-campus access to 36 journals from the American Chemical Society, including Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Bioconjugate Chemistry, Biomacromolecules, Chemical Research in Toxicology, Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, Journal of Natural Products, Journal of Organic Chemistry, Journal of Proteome Research, and Molecular Pharmaceutics. This includes access to back issues.

Check out the ACS search engine (from any computer on campus) at American Chemical Society Journals, which is listed under the pharmacy databases on the library website.

Swilley Pubmed - More links to free fulltext

When you search Swilley Pubmed, there's another tab at the top of your results list. Now you will see a tab for Mercerlib, the articles you can access via the library, and Free full text, which includes articles that are freely available on the Internet.

Remember, you can always find the Swilley Pubmed link at the library's pharmacy database page.

New pharmacogenomics database

The Connectivity Map is a database that provides information on how human genes respond to medications. Developed by researchers at the Broad Institute, a joint project of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University, this "tool relies on genes to connect diseases with potential drugs to treat them and to predict how new drugs function in cells" (Broad Institute, 2006).

Where to look for legal information

There's a new web page that includes resources on law & ethics. It contains links to databases, as well as website containing the text of Georgia law. The premier database for looking up legal information is Lexis-Nexis (available through Galileo.) In addition to searching federal and state codes and some case law, you can search for articles in legal journals and news sources. All these materials are fulltext.

Search Pubmed, see what's available at Swilley Library

Now you can search Pubmed and easily display records for items available through the Swilley Library. Just use our customized Pubmed link, now displayed on the library's list of databases. When looking at the list of results, just click on the "mercerlib" tab to see records for articles that should be available through the library. Each record in the mercerlib results list should display either a "Swilley e-journal" or "Check @ Swilley Library" link so you can link to the electronic fulltext or check to see if we have the article in print.

Note: If you use My NCBI, then use these instructionsons how to create a tab of Swilley Library results when you are logged into your own My NCBI account.

New tool for citing references

Now you can store your references in your RefWorks account and have RefWorks generate a bilbliography using AMA style or a style from a specific journal. Download references from Pubmed or other article index databases. RefWorks is an online research management tool designed to help you easily gather, manage, store and share all types of information, as well as generate citations and bibliographies.

Check out and create your own account at Refworks. First, you'll need to log in to the Swilley page for Library Passwords for Databases. Use the Galileo password to log in. Then, you'll see the link and the initial password for accessing Refworks.
